Ice hockey has been a staple of the Winter Olympics since the introduction of the Winter Games in 1924. The sport gained further prominence when the "Miracle on Ice" occurred at the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, where the underdog United States team defeated the Soviet Union. The Olympic tournaments feature national teams composed of professional and amateur players, with the men's and women's competitions being highly anticipated events.

Ice Hockey in China

With the approach of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, ice hockey has seen a rise in popularity in China. Efforts to promote the sport include the development of ice rinks and training facilities, as well as the involvement of international teams and players in Chinese leagues. The establishment of the Kunlun Red Star team in the KHL marked a significant step in integrating China into the international ice hockey community.

Equipment and Playing Surface

The standard ice hockey rink is 200 feet long and 85 feet wide, featuring a central ice surface with goals at each end. Players wear specialized equipment for protection, including helmets, pads, and gloves. The puck is a small, hard rubber disc that players aim to shoot into the opposing team's net using a curved stick, known as a hockey stick.

Rules and Gameplay

An ice hockey game is played in three 20-minute periods, with teams consisting of six players each: one goaltender and five skaters. Players aim to score goals by getting the puck past the opposing goaltender. The team with the most goals at the end of the game wins. Key rules include offside, icing, and penalties for infractions such as tripping or high-sticking.
